Why It Is So Special
This serviced apartment is situated within a substantial semi-detached Victorian villa which is listed under the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 for it's special architectural and historic interest as a Grade: II and it was probably built in the early 1840s. The house is believed to have been built shortly after the arrival of the London and South Western Railway in 1839-40. Possibly with the chalk spoil from the nearby railway cutting.
The building is important and of special architectural interest as a well-preserved early-Victorian (1819 - 1901) villa in a striking picturesque style, and also for the use of rammed chalk for the massive principal walls with a painted render finish, incised to imitate ashlar masonry on such a large scale is unusual and is possibly the tallest example of the use of this type of constructional technique in the country.
It occupies a prominent hillside overlooking the city and is a striking landmark with slate roofs - brick chimney stacks and the tile hanging to the Edwardian (1901 - 1909) extension of 2 storeys above the raised basement has square bay windows with timber casements and glazing bars to upper lights.
The building consists 5 storeys raised basement 2 principal floors 2 attic floors within the steep pitched roofs. The principal façades of the 2 bays have square bay windows to the raised basement/ground floors with moulded cornices and crenellated parapets. Fenestration pattern is similar on the rear elevations but without the bays or drip moulds. Timber sash windows, with tripartite lights with 4-over-4 panes to the central sash, 2-over-2 to the margin lights and timber panelled doors with plain fanlights.
The main house entrance is in a set back 2-storey wing - the apartment entrance is on the ground floor. Internally the apartment retains it orginal plan with much Victorian (1819 - 1901) joinery, along with a number of original and later fittings.
