Past and present
Winchester is one of England's most famous areas - and one of its most historic. The city has Roman origins and was once a Saxon capital. Among its most famous buildings are Winchester College, founded in 1382 as well as the world famous Winchester Cathedral, founded much earlier, in the 7th Century. Today the cathedral still draws the crowds - especially Jane Austin's tomb and the monument to Bishop Wilberforce. Winchester's proud tradition as a seat of learning is also very evident. Both Winchester Collegeand St Swithun's were recently listed amongst the 'Top 50' schools in the country. The Winchester Discovery Centre houses the library. |
